About Me

I build two types of miniatures: miniature buildings from the city I live in, and scale plastic models. If you're interested in my miniature building artworks, I recommend you visit my Instagram page where I focus on my artworks - https://www.instagram.com/davidhouriganartist/
If you're interested in my scale model kits and the techniques I use, then you're already in the right place - read on!

I am a life-long model maker. I've been making models for over 30 years. The modelling bug bit me hard when I was about ten years old, back in about 1982. I remember seeing a built 1/35 Tamiya model tank on display in a toy store, and I was hooked.

I tend to build mostly armor and tanks from WW2. Any WW2 armor or soft-skinned vehicles in 1/35 scale interest me. My airplane builds have all been 1/32 scale. Yes, they take up a lot more room than 1/48 or 1/72 scale warbirds, but the detail you can add in makes it worth it.

I live in Melbourne, Australia with my partner and my young daughter.  My daughter often guest-stars in my videos - sometimes planned, sometimes not. She is definitely interested in model making, and I love to work with her at my model desk. As she gets older we'll tackle more advanced builds, but at this stage just splodging the paint on is her idea of fun.

For my day job I used to be a graphic designer and art director. These skills come in handy when it's time to photograph builds, or digitally manipulate images of my models to set them in more realistic settings.

I also collect pickelhaubes (the spiked helmets worn by Imperial German troops in WW1) and WW1 medals.

The Workbench.

Anyway, enough about me. I want to share my knowledge and experience with you, and hopefully entertain a little along the way. So stop reading about me and read about my models instead. Go on, you know you want to.

Cheers,

Dave

  1. Hey Dave,
My plan is to have the entire thing completed, if they ever are... just like my novels LOL, then do a step-by-step back and ask the lads on Sci-Fiantasy if they can guess from what model the idea came from. As promised, you'll be getting photos for your website at the same time. You have my e-mail send me yours please. HG

    1. Hi HG, I don't seem to be able to access your email, only your Google Plus profile. If you use the CONTACT ME tab on the right of my blog pages, you can email me directly and then I'll be able to reply with my email address. Looking forward to the build mate! Dave

    1. Hi Lange, there should be a "Contact Me" field on the right of the posts if you're on a desktop. If you're on a mobile, at the very bottom there is a button "View Web Version" which will show the screen like a desktop version, and you'll be able to access the "Contact Me' on the right. Cheers, Dave

  7. Hi Dave! Just found your site and have enjoyed watching your tutorials with my morning coffee. Love the garbage can—thanks for making a video on that. I try to use everyday objects if I can. Much cheaper. I found a gadget at a craft store to make my corrugated metal, but I like the tool you showed. Brilliant! Thank you again for the great tutorials. Cheers from the USA
