Scratch building mechanical detail using a Nerf gun for donor parts

I've been busy this week scratch building more of the engine and mechanical detail of the Sci-Fi build. These are the bits of inner mechanics which will be visible through gaps in the outer hull: in particular, I've been building a section which will mount two hydraulic arms which hold a large stabiliser fin rudder thingee. And my secret weapon in this part of the build may surprise you, as it is literally a secret weapon. (Cue evil villain laugh...)

I spotted this Nerf style dart gun in my local Kmart recently. In particular, I noticed the cool moulded in technological-looking bit on the barrel, and I thought to myself "I can use that..." For five bucks, I was willing to make that investment.

Source.

So I brought it home, and played with it with my daughter for a couple of weeks until the novelty wore off. I was up front about the fact that I bought it to pull it apart for a model, but I rather suspect she will be sad when she sees that I actually did ruin a perfectly good toy...

This is the section that caught my eye. Great mechanical detail.

I unscrewed the two halves, and attacked it with a hacksaw.

Some various bits and pieces glued on (yes, that is a drive wheel from a 1/35 Tiger tank) and I have a mount ready for my two industrial welded hydraulic arms that I've been working on recently.

I think it still needs some various pipes and little details added, but overall once it is painted gunmetal and weathered I think this will be a pretty convincing section of mechanical interior.

(Just don't tell my daughter.)

Cheers,

Dave
